The University of Lethbridge has announced a major sponsorship agreement with South Country Co-Op, which will see the institution’s athletics and recreation complex renamed the Co-Op Centre for Sport & Wellness.
Under the 25-year partnership, South Country Co-Op will contribute $4.25 million, or approximately $170,000 annually, marking the company’s largest and longest-term community investment in southern Alberta to date.
All proceeds from the sponsorship will remain within the university’s Department of Athletics and Recreation Services. The funds will support facility enhancements, address operational and equipment needs, and establish a new endowed scholarship to expand financial aid for students. A portion of the scholarship fund will also benefit from the University of Lethbridge Board of Governors’ matching program.
The agreement is designed to ensure continued improvement of the university’s fitness and recreation infrastructure, with planned upgrades to athletic equipment, training areas, and general amenities.
Opened in 2007, the Centre for Sport & Wellness serves more than 500,000 visitors annually and remains a central hub for athletic, recreational, and community activities across southern Alberta.
The Co-Op Centre for Sport & Wellness represents a long-term commitment between the university and one of the region’s leading member-owned businesses, reinforcing a shared investment in health, wellness, and student success.
