Essa Township is taking early steps to determine whether naming rights partnerships could play a role in the long-term funding of its two municipal arenas in Angus and Thornton.
A report before council recommends developing a formal naming rights policy that would allow the township to consider such partnerships in the future. The proposal does not involve any immediate changes to facility names, but instead focuses on establishing clear rules and governance should opportunities arise.
According to the report, both arenas are heavily used community facilities with ongoing operating costs and upcoming capital needs. In response, staff are assessing whether naming rights agreements could serve as a supplemental revenue source to support facility sustainability without affecting service levels.
The proposed policy framework would outline sponsor eligibility, valuation and term structures, prohibited categories, and approval requirements. Any agreement would require council approval and be subject to defined conditions for termination or removal.
If council endorses the recommendation, staff would return with a draft policy for review. This would position Essa Township to evaluate potential naming rights opportunities in a structured, transparent manner while maintaining alignment with municipal priorities and community expectations.
